Right. Judging by the title, I am running a poetic dental site now. How cool is that!
And now I digress…
The sight and sound of a dentist’s drill can send shivers up the spine. Even the hardest and most masculine men can cower in the dentist’s office from either childhood fears, or just simply because the tools of a dentist’s trade can look like medieval torture devices. For someone with damaged teeth, the thought of a cosmetic dentistry veneers procedure, or any other dental work, is often met with such debilitating fear that they will choose the more damaging and uncomfortable solution of living with unhealthy teeth. These fears are starting to melt away, with the advent of the dental spa.
Help Is On The Way!
Is it even possible to be smiling on the way to your dental appointment? Yep. Not only is it possible, but now modern and forward thinking dentists have incorporated complete spa retreats within the confines of their offices. These spa like conditions can not only have you more relaxed when faced with a dental procedure, they can actually soothe and relax you from daily stress and leave you feeling invigorated and happy. Yes, going to the dentist can now actually make you happy. Who knew?
There are those professionals within the dental community – all over the world – with a great concern for their patients (after providing the best dental care) to provide a pampered and completely painless experience, no matter if someone arrives for cosmetic veneers, or even endodontic procedures (root canal).
Some dental spas take you through a regimen of relaxation techniques normally used at exclusive health and wellness centers. Things like a warm oil hand and foot massage, lavender scented neck wraps, VR movie goggles, aromatherapy, and many other amenities that most people never experience in their normal life. There are a few newer dental spas that provide the total spa experience, complete with Zen waterfalls, soft lighting, relaxing music, relexology, and the list goes on.
Dental phobias are not uncommon, in fact there are many otherwise brave and upstanding people walking the streets with very neglected teeth, simply from the fear of pain and the expected discomfort of repairing existing damage. This fear is not necessarily borne from actual pain memories, but from the fear itself. People 35 and older are noted as being even more susceptible to dental phobias. This is simply because before the advancements in certain dental technology (which began in the late ’80’s) dentist visits were, in fact, a potentially painful experience.
Having said that, it’s to the point now where certain dental spa professionals have seen people falling asleep while getting work done in the dentist’s chair, even during more invasive procedures such as root canal therapy. So the fear of dentists is fast becoming a thing of the past thanks to dental spas, and the modern practitioner becoming acutely aware of their patients need for comfort. One of the most promising aspects of dental spas is the price for these added features and services. Most are completey free! Yes, in most cases it won’t cost you an extra penny to experience this pampering, as the spa experience is being recognized more and more as a necessary part of the positve dental experience. Now this is not always the case, especially for the more elaborate locations, but generally speaking there should be little or no extra cost involved.
As an aside, I have to mention that if you are someone considering a dental tourism trip, there are some overseas dental spas that offer a complete vacation package. This includes a holiday wherein you can repair your teeth by well trained professionals, along with sight seeing and living at wonderful accomodations while you fix your smile. I’ve personally experienced the absolute joy of attending one popular dental tourism spot, the Bangkok Dental Spa (click the link to check it out). On a holiday to Thailand I was overcome with an incredible tooth ache (a molar no less – ouch!) and found the Bangkok Dental Spa through the concierge at my hotel. (Thanks Erawan Grand Hyatt!!) Needless to say attending the dental spa, meeting Dr. Lily and the staff, well I can only say this; I recommend Bangkok Dental Spa to anyone who wants to get a cosmetic dentistry veneers procedure.
In closing, the point I need to hammer home is this; dental phobias need not cause you to avoid dentists anymore, since there are a great deal of spa-like atmospheres to wash away any fears and leave you with a pampered and completely pain free experience. You may even find yourself looking forward to your next visit.

When I read the tag dental tourism I laughed! I can’t imagine anyone WANTING to do such a thing on a trip but that doesn’t sound so bad. As someone with dental phobia I’m glad to see dentists are taking more note of these issues

yep, dental tourism is real as much as it is odd lol! It’s becoming the offshoot of medical tourism, which is quite a booming business in South East Asia and Mexico. Actually, for dental work I can attest to the cost benefits of going overseas to get the work done. It’s just important the establishment has a good rep and the doctors are accredited.
I’ll be doing a series on it later down the road, showing the actual cost savings. Check back cuz it may blow you away!!
